Introducing Ebbtide: Clinically Proven Uterine Pain Relief for Period Cramps

For many women, period cramps are more than just a minor inconvenience—they’re a common and often disruptive part of monthly life. In fact, studies show that more than 90% of menstruating women experience painful cramps at some point and up to 30% of women experienced severe pain with many reporting that the discomfort interfered with work, sleep, social activities, and overall quality of life.

When uterine muscle (myometrium) contractions during menstruation are intense, blood flow to the muscle and the lining of the uterus (endometrium) is severely reduced causing ischemic pain. Additionally, prostaglandins (PGF₂α, in particular) are also released due to ischemia and these substances stimulate nerve fibers to further increase pain.

At Vella Bioscience, we have discovered, in preclinical studies, that CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) and CBD (cannabidiol) can reduce the intensity of contractions of the uterine muscle or myometrium. In fact, CBDA is particularly effective in reducing intense uterine contractions.

What is EbbTide and how does it work?

Ebbtide is a vaginal suppository formulated with CPTv1™, Vella’s patented, plant-based technology. This unique formulation of CBDA and CBD is clinically proven to melt period pain away, offering women a new, non-oral option for managing menstrual discomfort. Unlike traditional oral painkillers, Ebbtide delivers CBDA and CBD pain relief directly where it’s needed, targeting uterine muscle contractions. This therefore avoids side-effects of oral pain medications such as stomach pain. It has been clinically tested, designed to be microbiome-friendly, and is recommended by OB/GYNs, offering a different approach to supporting menstrual wellness and helping women manage cramps more comfortably.

The clinical science behind Ebbtide

Ebbtide’s efficacy was evaluated in a clinical trial of 48 women aged 22–36 years of age, who experienced lifelong mild to severe menstrual pain (primary dysmenorrhea) but had no gynecological disorders. The study found:

  • 44% overall pain reduction, with 68% reduction in those with mild-to-moderate pain initially

  • 81% of women reduced or eliminated oral pain medications

  • 85% of participants reported that they would use the product for future menstrual pain, with over half of participants (56%) reporting that they would use Ebbtide as their sole treatment for menstrual pain.

  • Most women used five suppositories per cycle, with 58% using only at night, 23% using both day and night, and 19% using during the day only

  • No serious side effects were observed; the most common complaint was mild leakage, easily managed with a pantyliner

Key features

Ebbtide stands out for several reasons:

  • Plant-based: Made with natural ingredients like coconut oil and CBDA and CBD, supporting  gentle and effective pain relief.

  • Clinically proven: Backed by research showing a significant reduction in menstrual pain and decreased need for oral pain medications.

  • OB/GYN recommended: Trusted by women’s health professionals for safe and effective period pain management.

  • Microbiome friendly: Designed to maintain a healthy vaginal microflora.

How to use Ebbtide

Using Ebbtide is simple and straightforward. The recommended dosage is one to two vaginal inserts within 24 hours, with at least four hours between doses. In clinical studies, most participants found that using one suppository per day for five days provided excellent relief.

For the best results, it’s ideal to start using Ebbtide at the first sign of cramps or bleeding and continue daily as needed. To use, lie down with your knees bent, gently insert the suppository at high up as comfortably possible, and allow it to fully dissolve. Most participants (98%) reported that the suppositories dissolved easily. Many women find that using it at night works best, as daytime use can sometimes cause mild leakage.

You shouldn’t use Ebbtide if you’re allergic to coconut, cannabinoids, or cannabis, and are pregnant or breastfeeding. This product is not compatible with condoms.
